Her journey started at the age of six years old, Melissa-May was surrounded by all aspects of creativity. Her ability to visualize things, put them onto paper and create anything from scratch was also apparent at a young age when she completed an illustration of her dream house, then constructed an entire floor plan and a model house made out of popsicle sticks. Furthermore, at the age of 12, her friend’s mother noticed Melissa-May’s gift of artistry and requested that she create cartoon place cards for her daughter’s Bat Mitzvah. She later was asked to create the invitations and centerpieces for her best friend’s Debutant ball.

My earliest memories are always centered around picking flowers in my mothers gardens. I would grab one of the glass bottles she collected and play around with any flowers I could find. Helianthus is the Latin term for sunflower and comes from the root Helio and Greek Helios, meaning Sun. As sunflowers are growing and beginning to bloom, they turn their heads towards the sun - I find this to be a great analogy for faith in Jesus. I grew up running around after my mom in her gardens and spent most of high school in the art department. I went off to design school and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. Soon after, I started my first “real” design job and have been working in the industry in either commercial or residential design ever since, giving me thirty-five years of design experience. A second related career in Floral Design was added to my skill set when I was employed as a part-time floral designer and trained at Longwood Gardens. I decorated twenty-one Christmas trees that year and did a lot of beautiful custom designs.

As a life-long flower fanatic and nature enthusiast, a career in the floral industry always sounded like a dream job to me. That dream bloomed into a reality in 2018, when I left my bland corporate job to pursue a full-time career as a floral designer.
