I am a Connecticut-based wedding and portrait photographer obsessed with candid moments, real emotion, and the connections between human beings. I strive to capture life as we actually live it: full of beauty and roughness, joy and struggle, extravagance and simplicity. When I photograph you, I’m not thinking about getting likes on social media. I’m thinking about what will make your heart grow three times its size. I’m thinking about what will make you ugly-cry, looking back. I’m thinking about you seeing how awesome and truly loved you are.

I’m queer; my partner is a trans man. We’ve been together since before he transitioned. He and I haven’t been able to take for granted that just any photographer would see and represent us accurately. As such, I focus on making ALL of my clients feel empowered and seen--and on making sure all kinds of people know they will be safe and honored in my presence. Photography is my soul work. I’m not here for the transaction. I’m here to help you see yourself as an integral part of the tangled, messy, wonderful whole of humanity. I’m here to document your joy, your emotions, and your love.

My husband I decided to elope, planning the whole event in a week. It was important to me to get great photos to share with the friends and family who wouldn't be with us on the day. As soon as I saw Cate Barry's portfolio, especially with the candid photos, I knew that she was the right person to capture the true spirit of the day. Luckily, she was able to squeeze us into her calendar, and our preliminary meetings with Cate were fantastic: she made sure she understood our priorities—super open to who we are and what we care about—and she acted as friend, therapist, and wedding expert in a very frantic time. She even recommended a fantastic officiant who was exactly our speed. On the day, the three of us met up for some outdoor photos before the ceremony, and while I was afraid my husband and I might be awkward or stiff, Cate put us at ease immediately, and we were smiling with natural poses in no time. Then at the venue, Cate both contributed to and captured the joyful, relaxed atmosphere of the day. We got our photos in record time, and even when we first flicked through the images on my phone over pizza, we could immediately tell Cate had memorialized the magic of the day, from happy tears to spontaneous jumping up and down with our witnesses. It means a lot to have wonderful pictures to share with our loved ones, and we would work with Cate again in a heartbeat.

Cate was an absolute dream to work with! She captured both our elopement wedding (10 guests at a beachside Airbnb in East Haven in early September) and a 1-hour couples’ photoshoot (early morning at the Yale campus in mid-October 2024). We couldn't have asked for a better experience! Her incredible skill, warm demeanor, and attention to detail truly set her apart. We spoke with many prospective photographers before deciding, but we just couldn’t look away from working with Cate after going through her brilliant portfolio and speaking with her on Zoom. Cate made us feel comfortable in front of the camera. She has an amazing ability to put you at ease, making the entire process natural and fun. The photos she took are some of our absolute favorites. We love how she captured our families, wedding ceremony, and couple photos with so much emotion and authenticity! One of the standout things about Cate is how prolific she is. She took and shared a delightfully ridiculous number of photos with us—over 2–3 photos per minute! Every single shot was excellently curated and edited, showcasing her skills as both a photographer and storyteller. This summer I had the pleasure of having Cate photograph my backyard micro wedding. She was great to work with and made sure to do meetings with us prior to the wedding to plan the photos we wanted and map out the timing of the day. This way it was an extremely smooth process for family photos prior and after the ceremony. Cate made the wedding photo experience so fun and the results were incredible! I couldn’t have asked for better photos. She got me a sneak peek within 24hrs and by 2-3 months our edited gallery was ready. Overall, our wedding moments wouldn’t be what they are without Cate’s amazing photos. I highly recommend her for your wedding.
