About this venue
Barren Ridge Vineyards is a small vineyard and winery in the heart of Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley. John and Shelby Higgs opened the vineyard in 2008, on land purchased by John’s father in 1934 when the farm was known as St. James Orchard. Clearing the land, tending the vines, and transforming the packing barn into a state-of-the-art winery has been a labor of love for the Higgs family. Part of their vision is to see other families celebrate the special occasions and milestones of their lives at Barren Ridge, and they created event spaces characterized by warmth, elegance, rustic beauty, and Southern hospitality, surrounded by a backdrop of spectacular views. Convenient to Staunton, Waynesboro, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Charlottesville, Roanoke as well as Richmond, Barren Ridge Vineyards offers an ideal venue for your celebration, with its friendly and knowledgeable staff, award-winning wines, breath-taking landscape, versatile event spaces, and gracious ambience.

The Lawn
Gorgeous mountain scenery
The most popular ceremony site at Barren Ridge, the Lawn is an open grassy field surrounded by grapevines and gorgeous mountain scenery. This airy space has abundant room for a ceremony of any size or configuration. The Lawn is accessible to most by foot, and also by car or golf cart. Many couples choose to have their ceremony here against the backdrop of the sunset on the Allegheny Mountains before returning to the main building for cocktail hour and reception.

The Patio
Views of the vineyard
Adjacent to the inviting warmth of the Tasting Room, our Patio boasts incredible views of the vineyard and surrounding farms and mountains. The Patio is a beautiful ceremony site option for those who want to combine the beauty of our landscape with the convenience of easy access to the winery’s amenities. The Patio also serves as an extension of the indoor cocktail hour area, and later, as a perfect spot for guests to mingle and get some air between dances in the Audrey Blackford room.

The Audrey Blackford Room
A beautiful scenic ballroom
Located on the second floor of the winery, and conveniently accessible by stairs or elevator, the Audrey Blackford Room is a large ballroom that comfortably seats up to 150 guests. With hardwood floors, vaulted ceiling, a large stone fireplace, dimmer-switch lighting, an in-house sound system, and windows showcasing views of the Blue Ridge mountains to the East and Allegheny mountains to the West, the Audrey Blackford Room is ideal for wedding receptions and rehearsal dinners.

For an Audrey Blackford Room reception, Barren Ridge Vineyards’ tables and up to 150 chairs are available for use. Our facility can include a total of ten round 72” tables, eight round 60” tables, two 8’ rectangular tables, and four 6’ rectangular tables. We can also offer the use of our handmade rustic table (made from wood planks that rest on wine barrels), 2 additional wine barrels for use as dessert or decoration stands, and a small table which can hold seating cards or photos of the happy couple. *Please note that outside ceremony chairs are not available from us, which must be rented separately.
The Tasting Room
Rustic & cozy
With a large stone fireplace, ceiling beams and wood paneling original to the old apple packing barn, wine bottles stored in vintage apple crates, and soft lighting from lamps and sconces, the Tasting Room offers an atmosphere of rustic coziness for a cocktail hour or indoor ceremony location. To one side of the spacious wooden bar, guests can look into our wine barrel room, while on the opposite side of the room, French doors invite guests to step out onto the Patio overlooking our eleven acres of vineyards.

For a cocktail hour in the Tasting Room, weddings have full use of the Tasting Room’s furniture if desired, which consists of various two- to fourseater round tables, as well as cushioned benches. Additionally, your licensed bartender may use our spacious Tasting Room bar, constructed of reclaimed wood from the original Barren Ridge 1890’s apple packing barn. *Please note that rental includes Barren Ridge Vineyards’ stemware, but does not include other glassware, china, silver, or linens.

Viognier Package

This package is indoor only, so ceremony and celebration occur in the amazing ballroom, You have an outside balcony however, overlooking the vineyard and the mountains. Included are tables, chairs, 3 stone fireplaces, wedding arch, barrels to decorate and cut your cake on, bridal chamber, party lighting, all around sound system, playing music by the pond as well, Bluetooth and WiFi throughout and 2 dedicated people the whole day there for you.
Cabernet Package

This package is only feasible from Sunday- Thursday from 7pm -11.30pm. You have the tasting room and the Italian patio for your ceremony and party available. We use the patio furniture and can set it up according to your plan. Included are tables, chairs, 2 stone fireplaces, wedding arch, barrels to decorate and cut your cake on, all around sound system, playing music by the pond as well, Bluetooth and WiFi throughout and 2 dedicated people the whole day.

Look no further than BRV!
My husband and I had to reschedule our wedding three times due to COVID and were under a time crunch: an upcoming military deployment. We decided LESS THAN A MONTH BEFORE to move our wedding to Barren Ridge. This was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life. In my humble opinion, you will not find a better venue than Barren Ridge Vineyard. Not just because of the unbelievably gorgeous property, the delicious wines and beautifully spaces, but mainly because of Angela and Rob. Let’s first talk about the gorgeous property, we got married out on the beautiful patio. All our guests were able to sit outside on comfortable patio chairs with a view of the vineyard as they watched us exchange vows. Stunning. (You can also get married out in the vineyard, but due to August heat we choose not to). Next the delicious wine. Go to a tasting. AMAZING. Half our guests bought bottles as they left, they loved the wine that much. Beautiful spaces. The tasting room was perfect for a grab and take cheese board (we had them individually wrapped for grab and go COVID style) and bar. The room upstairs is spacious, inviting and gorgeous. We were able to have a dinner, cut the cake and do the first dances with plenty of space to social distance. The room is understated in a way that allows the architecture and the vineyard to shine. I hate over the top venues, but this room matches the décor of a vineyard perfectly. Simple flower arrangements and you’re done! Rob and Angela had different sized tables and other décor options which made setting up the room an easy feat. Now on to Rob and Angela. When I met them, I will be honest, I was in tears. My future husband and I were leaving for Japan for three years in September and if I didn’t pull off an August wedding, I wouldn’t be having a wedding. When I say these two LEAPT into action, I’m not kidding. They leapt! With their unbelievable amount of help we pulled together a wedding in a month. Armed with just a few sketches of seating arrangements and a small number of vendors Angela and Rob pulled off our miracle. I got the most beautiful wedding of my dreams. I also had a lot of COVID “demands” like all the tables with disposable water bottles, silverware and all food in to go containers. They helped make that work with the caterer. They allowed us to play music over the blue tooth speaker. The BRV team is amazing. When you get married at Barren Ridge, you choose to have Barren Ridge a part of your life forever. You open Barren Ridge wine every year on your anniversary. You have your birthday parties on the patio. You bring your kids on a picnic in the vines. When our original wedding was canceled, I was devastated. Little did I know I would still have the wedding of my dreams. It was better than the dream one I imagined (even with COVID). Our wedding day was so perfect. Barren Ridge is a place I will call home and a place I will keep coming back to, year after year. We are so lucky to have gotten married here. If you choose BRV, it will be the best wedding decision you ever make (after maybe the groom lol). (p.s. If you are planning a microwedding, Angela and Rob have been doing them since August 2020. They are experts now. Our wedding spread 0 cases of COVID and that’s in no small part to the diligence of the BRV team)
