I had my sights set on opening my own shave ice business & spending more time with my husband & two young daughters. With an art background as a professional painter, Kellie Velasquez attended the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) to hone her baking and pastry skills. After her first year in school, she sought out the opportunity to work with world renowned Cake Designer, Maggie Austin, where she developed her fundamental skills with wedding cakes and design. After completing the prestigious baking and pastry arts degree program at CIA, she held positions at some of San Francisco’s top bakeries, including Craftsman & Wolves, Susie Cakes, and most recently Pastry Chef at the popular Jane on Larkin.

When I opened SF Candy Bar in 2012, the business was busy from the start. In 2012, the economy was just coming out of a recession and Silicon Valley started to attract top talent from all over the world.
